Fast Cyber Essentials for Startups: A Simple Certification Roadmap

Startups move quickly, and security is often something the founders plan to deal with later. Then a larger customer asks for a Cyber Essentials certificate before signing, an investor raises it in due diligence, or a tender lists it as a requirement, and later becomes this week. Young businesses are often better placed than they realise, with fewer legacy systems, newer hardware and fewer users. What they usually lack is a clear process. This roadmap offers a simple route from not having thought about it to holding a certificate.

Why Startups Need Certification Sooner Than They Expect

For many startups, the first request for Cyber Essentials comes from a customer rather than a regulator. Larger organisations want evidence that suppliers take basic security seriously, and some government contracts require it. Because these requests arrive alongside a commercial opportunity, many founders look into fast cyber essentials straight away. It helps to know the assessment is the quick part. With a certification body like Solusec, it happens within one business day as standard. What decides your timeline is how quickly you get your own setup in order.

Step One: Map What You Actually Use

Start by writing down everything the business uses. List every laptop, phone and tablet that accesses company data, including personal devices used for work email or messaging. Then list every cloud service: email, file storage, code repositories, design tools, finance software and customer databases. For a small startup this might take an hour, but it forms the foundation for everything else and answers the scope question. Most startups certify the whole organisation. If contractors or freelancers access your systems, think carefully about their devices too.

Step Two: Get the Basics Right on Every Device

With your inventory in hand, check each device. Every operating system and application must be supported by its vendor and receive security updates, with critical and high-risk updates applied within fourteen days. Automatic updates make this much easier. Firewalls should be on, malware protection active and default passwords changed. Staff should use a standard account for everyday work rather than an administrator account. Startups often give everyone admin rights early on to remove friction, so this may need changing, and assessors look at it closely.

Step Three: Lock Down Accounts and Cloud Tools

Cloud tools are where startups live. Multi-factor authentication must be on for every user on every cloud service, with extra care for administrators. Remove accounts belonging to people who have left, including interns and contractors, and eliminate or properly protect shared logins. Keep a small number of named admin accounts. It also helps to agree on a simple rule for new tools, such as checking if MFA is available before anyone signs up. That keeps the business compliant as it grows rather than building a fresh backlog before renewal.

Step Four: Submit, Pass and Build the Habit

Once everything is in place, complete the questionnaire honestly and submit it. A startup with a clean setup can often finish in a few hours. Solusec's fixed pricing starts at £320 plus VAT for micro businesses with up to nine staff, with optional add-ons for a gap analysis or urgent turnaround. A passed certificate is valid for twelve months. Treat certification as a habit rather than a one-off. Keeping your inventory current and reviewing accounts regularly makes renewal simple and future customer questionnaires far less painful.
