Copper Sulfate: Properties, Uses and Industrial Applications

What Is Copper Sulfate

سولفات مس — copper sulfate — is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CuSO4, most commonly encountered in its pentahydrate form (CuSO4·5H2O) as the distinctive blue crystalline solid that gives it the common name blue vitriol or blue stone. The anhydrous form is a white or off-white powder. Copper sulfate is produced commercially by the dissolution of copper metal or copper oxide in sulfuric acid, and is one of the most widely used copper compounds in industrial, agricultural, and commercial applications globally. Its combination of copper's biocidal properties with the solubility and reactivity of the sulfate salt makes it useful across an extraordinary range of applications.

Agricultural Applications

Agriculture is one of the most important markets for copper sulfate, using it as both a fungicide and as a micronutrient fertilizer. The Bordeaux mixture — a combination of copper sulfate and calcium hydroxide (lime) that was developed in France in the nineteenth century for the control of downy mildew on grapevines — remains one of the oldest and most widely used agricultural fungicides still in commercial use. Copper sulfate solutions and dust formulations protect crops including vines, hops, apples, and various vegetables from fungal diseases by the biocidal action of the copper ion released in contact with plant tissue and pathogen surfaces. As a micronutrient fertilizer, copper sulfate corrects copper deficiency in crops grown on soils with naturally low copper availability.

Water Treatment Applications

Water treatment utilities use copper sulfate as an algicide for the control of algae growth in reservoirs, ponds, lakes, and distribution system storage facilities. The copper ion released from dissolved copper sulfate disrupts the photosynthetic systems of algae at concentrations that are below the levels harmful to fish and other aquatic organisms — though the margin between effective algicidal and toxic concentrations for aquatic life is relatively narrow and requires careful dosage management. In swimming pool water treatment, copper-based algicides including copper sulfate are used as supplementary algae control agents.

Industrial Metal Treatment

The electroplating industry uses copper sulfate as the electrolyte in acid copper electroplating baths, where electrical current drives the deposition of copper metal from the sulfate solution onto the cathode work piece. Copper sulfate-based acid copper plating provides the bright, ductile copper deposits used in printed circuit board manufacturing, decorative plating, and as an undercoat for subsequent nickel and chrome plating. The chemical copper deposition — electroless copper — used to metallize non-conductive surfaces in circuit board manufacture also uses copper sulfate as the copper source in the plating bath formulation.

Animal Feed Supplementation

Copper sulfate is used as a copper supplementation source in animal feeds for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture species. Copper is an essential trace mineral for animal nutrition, required for enzyme function, iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and immune system function. At recommended supplementation levels, copper sulfate in animal feed addresses copper deficiency and supports optimal animal growth and health. At higher concentrations — well above nutritional requirements — copper has been used historically as a growth promotant in swine and poultry production, though this use is now restricted in many jurisdictions.

Chemical Manufacturing and Laboratory Use

The chemical industry uses copper sulfate as a raw material in the synthesis of various copper compounds including copper oxide, copper carbonate, copper acetate, and various organic copper compounds used in catalysis, chemical synthesis, and specialty applications. Laboratory applications of copper sulfate include its use as a biuret reagent component for protein quantification, as a reagent in various qualitative analytical chemistry tests, and as a coloring agent in flame tests.

Handling and Environmental Considerations

Copper sulfate is classified as harmful to aquatic organisms and must be handled and disposed of in accordance with applicable environmental regulations. Spills to waterways should be prevented, and waste copper sulfate solutions should be treated to remove copper before discharge. Workers handling copper sulfate should use appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves and eye protection to prevent skin and eye irritation from contact with the material.
