Microsoft launched SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SPSE) to change the way organizations run and maintain SharePoint in on-premises and hybrid environments. Instead of following the traditional model of releasing a completely new SharePoint Server version every few years, Microsoft introduced a continuous, evergreen servicing model that allows SharePoint Server to receive regular security, quality, performance, and feature improvements without requiring customers to wait for another major product release.

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition became generally available on November 2, 2021, and Microsoft currently lists it under the Modern Lifecycle Policy with no fixed retirement date.

The change is particularly important for organizations that want the control and data residency benefits of an on-premises SharePoint deployment while still receiving capabilities and improvements at a more regular cadence.

What Is SharePoint Server Subscription Edition?

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition is Microsoft's current-generation on-premises SharePoint Server platform. It provides organizations with a way to deploy SharePoint within their own infrastructure while adopting a servicing approach that is closer to the continuous-update model used by modern cloud services.

Earlier SharePoint releases, including SharePoint Server 2016 and SharePoint Server 2019, generally followed a traditional product lifecycle. New functionality was associated primarily with major product releases, while monthly public updates concentrated mainly on security, reliability, and quality improvements.

With Subscription Edition, Microsoft changed that model. New feature experiences are delivered through Feature Updates, while monthly Public Updates provide ongoing security, quality, functionality, and stability improvements.

This means organizations no longer need to plan their SharePoint strategy around another major version release simply to obtain newer platform capabilities.

Why Did Microsoft Introduce SharePoint Server Subscription Edition?

1. To Move SharePoint Server Toward an Evergreen Model

The primary reason Microsoft introduced Subscription Edition was to move SharePoint Server toward a continuous update or evergreen model.

Under the older approach, customers could remain on a specific SharePoint version for years. While this provided stability, it also meant that organizations could fall significantly behind the latest technologies.

Microsoft explains that the Subscription Edition servicing model allows new feature experiences to be introduced regularly rather than requiring customers to wait for another major version.

This provides a middle ground between traditional on-premises software and cloud-based continuous delivery.

Organizations can continue operating SharePoint on their own infrastructure while receiving regular product improvements.

2. To Deliver New SharePoint Features More Quickly

Another major reason for launching SharePoint Server Subscription Edition was to reduce the waiting period for new functionality.

Previously, organizations using SharePoint Server 2019 might have needed to wait for a future major SharePoint release to obtain significant new capabilities.

Subscription Edition changes this approach through Feature Updates.

Microsoft currently plans Feature Updates twice a year—one in the spring and another in the autumn. These updates are incorporated into the monthly Public Updates.

For example, Microsoft has continued introducing new capabilities through versions such as 23H1, 23H2, 24H1, 24H2, 25H1, 25H2, and 26H1.

The 26H1 release demonstrates that Subscription Edition is still receiving new functionality in 2026, including improvements such as the Modern People Card and additional administration and security capabilities.

3. To Improve Security and Keep Organizations Current

Security is another important reason behind the Subscription Edition model.

A traditional long-term release model can create situations where organizations operate older builds for extended periods. Although security patches may continue to be released, the underlying platform can become increasingly distant from Microsoft's latest supported configuration.

Subscription Edition encourages organizations to maintain a more current SharePoint environment.

Microsoft gives each Public Update its own one-year support window. This approach is designed to balance Microsoft's need to keep customers current with the practical reality that enterprise SharePoint farms require testing and controlled deployment.

Microsoft also recommends installing Public Updates as soon as they become available.

The result is a servicing strategy in which organizations are encouraged to maintain their farms continuously rather than postponing upgrades for several years.

4. To Eliminate the Need for Traditional Major-Version Upgrades

One of the biggest advantages of SharePoint Server Subscription Edition is the reduction in traditional version-to-version upgrade cycles.

With previous SharePoint releases, moving from one major version to another could become a significant IT project. Administrators had to assess compatibility, plan migration or upgrade paths, test customizations, review integrations, and schedule downtime.

Subscription Edition is designed to reduce the need for these large-scale transitions.

Instead, organizations can maintain the Subscription Edition platform and apply cumulative updates and Feature Updates as Microsoft releases them.

Microsoft's update documentation confirms that SharePoint Server Subscription Edition receives regular Public Updates, with current updates delivered as a single cumulative package containing the relevant fixes and changes.

This makes the maintenance process more incremental.

5. To Provide a Predictable Feature Release Schedule

Continuous delivery does not necessarily mean unpredictable changes.

Microsoft introduced Feature Release Rings to give administrators more control over when new feature experiences become available.

Feature Updates group new capabilities together on a predictable schedule. Microsoft states that Feature Updates are released twice each year. Organizations can therefore plan testing, training, compatibility validation, and deployment around a known release cadence.

This is particularly valuable for large enterprises.

A company operating hundreds or thousands of SharePoint sites cannot simply activate every new capability without evaluating its impact. Administrators may need to test:

  • Custom SharePoint solutions

  • Third-party applications

  • PowerShell scripts

  • Authentication configurations

  • Search customizations

  • Workflows

  • Business processes

  • User training

  • Security policies

  • Compliance requirements

The release-ring model gives organizations greater control over this transition.

6. To Bring On-Premises SharePoint Closer to Microsoft's Cloud Strategy

Microsoft's cloud services have increasingly moved toward continuous delivery.

SharePoint Online receives new functionality without requiring customers to perform traditional major-version upgrades.

Subscription Edition brings some of this philosophy to SharePoint Server.

This is important because not every organization can move completely to SharePoint Online.

Some businesses have requirements involving:

  • Data residency

  • Regulatory compliance

  • Internal infrastructure

  • Network isolation

  • Custom applications

  • Existing investments

  • Security policies

  • Operational control

  • Hybrid architectures

Subscription Edition gives these organizations an on-premises SharePoint platform that can continue evolving.

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition vs. SharePoint Server 2019

The difference becomes clearer when comparing the two servicing models.

Area SharePoint Server 2019 SharePoint Server Subscription Edition
Product approach Traditional release Evergreen/continuous servicing
Major-version dependency Higher Reduced
Feature delivery Primarily major releases Regular Feature Updates
Security updates Public Updates Public Updates
Feature Updates Limited compared with SPSE model Twice yearly
Lifecycle model Fixed product lifecycle Modern Lifecycle Policy
Current development direction Legacy platform Microsoft's current SharePoint Server platform

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition therefore represents more than another SharePoint version. It represents a change in Microsoft's product strategy.

How SharePoint Subscription Edition Updates Work

Microsoft separates the servicing model into two major categories: Public Updates (PUs) and Feature Updates.

Public Updates

Public Updates provide ongoing improvements, including:

  • Security fixes

  • Bug fixes

  • Reliability improvements

  • Performance improvements

  • Functionality improvements

The updates are cumulative, meaning the latest update includes previously released fixes.

Beginning with the March 2023 update, Microsoft changed the packaging of Subscription Edition updates. Instead of separate core and language-pack updates, Microsoft moved to a single monthly software update containing the applicable changes.

Feature Updates

Feature Updates introduce new product experiences.

Microsoft releases them approximately twice a year and incorporates them into Public Updates. Examples include 22H2, 23H1, 23H2, 24H1, 24H2, 25H1, 25H2, and 26H1.

This allows SharePoint Server to evolve without creating an entirely new product generation.

What Does "Subscription Edition" Actually Mean?

The word Subscription can be misleading if interpreted solely as a licensing concept.

The more important distinction is the servicing philosophy.

Microsoft describes Subscription Edition as an evergreen model. Rather than receiving a new SharePoint Server product every several years, customers remain on Subscription Edition and continuously update their deployments.

The product itself follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy and currently has no fixed retirement date listed by Microsoft.

However, this does not mean administrators can install SharePoint once and ignore updates indefinitely.

Quite the opposite.

Organizations must maintain supported builds to remain within Microsoft's servicing requirements.

Why Staying Updated Is Important

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition makes regular maintenance an essential part of SharePoint administration.

Microsoft introduced notifications that can alert administrators when an installed Subscription Edition build is approaching its support expiration. A build is generally supported for one year after its release date under the product servicing policy.

This approach encourages organizations to avoid operating outdated builds.

For administrators, a good Subscription Edition maintenance strategy should include:

  1. Monitoring SharePoint Public Updates.

  2. Testing updates in a non-production environment.

  3. Reviewing custom solutions before deployment.

  4. Maintaining farm backups.

  5. Checking third-party dependencies.

  6. Scheduling production deployment.

  7. Monitoring farm health after updates.

  8. Keeping documentation current.

  9. Testing authentication and integrations.

  10. Maintaining a rollback and recovery strategy.

Regular maintenance is therefore an important part of operating SharePoint Subscription Edition.

SharePoint Subscription Edition and Long-Term Enterprise Planning

The Subscription Edition model changes how organizations should think about SharePoint infrastructure.

Instead of planning a massive upgrade every few years, IT teams can establish a continuous SharePoint maintenance lifecycle.

This can make budgeting and resource planning more predictable because upgrades become smaller, recurring operational activities rather than occasional transformation projects.

It also encourages organizations to maintain better documentation and testing practices.

For example, a company that previously performed SharePoint upgrades every several years may have allowed customizations and integrations to accumulate. Under Subscription Edition, regularly testing updates makes it easier to identify compatibility problems before they become large-scale upgrade obstacles.

Does SharePoint Server Subscription Edition Replace SharePoint Online?

No.

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition and SharePoint Online serve different deployment requirements.

SharePoint Online is Microsoft's cloud-based SharePoint service, while Subscription Edition is intended for organizations that need or prefer SharePoint Server infrastructure.

Subscription Edition is therefore particularly relevant to businesses that need to retain on-premises control while still wanting a more modern SharePoint platform.

Organizations can also use SharePoint Server in hybrid environments, combining on-premises infrastructure with Microsoft 365 services where appropriate.

What Happens to Older SharePoint Versions?

Microsoft's introduction of Subscription Edition also reflects the broader transition away from older SharePoint Server releases.

Organizations running older versions such as SharePoint Server 2016 or 2019 need to consider their long-term platform strategy.

Moving to Subscription Edition can provide a more sustainable route for organizations that need to continue operating SharePoint Server rather than moving entirely to SharePoint Online.

However, migration planning should account for:

  • Customizations

  • Third-party solutions

  • Authentication

  • Search

  • Workflows

  • Databases

  • Service applications

  • Integrations

  • Storage

  • Backup and recovery

  • User access

  • Compliance requirements

A SharePoint upgrade should therefore be treated as an infrastructure project rather than simply installing a newer software package.

Microsoft's Continuing Investment in Subscription Edition

The continued release of Feature Updates demonstrates that Microsoft has not treated Subscription Edition as a static replacement for SharePoint Server 2019.

For example, SharePoint Server Subscription Edition 26H1 introduced additional functionality in 2026, while earlier releases introduced authentication, search, administration, and platform improvements.

At the same time, Microsoft continues to remove or deprecate older technologies. The Subscription Edition deprecated-features documentation lists technologies such as InfoPath Forms Services, SharePoint Designer 2013, Internet Explorer 11, and basic authentication, while several older services and APIs have been removed.

This shows that the platform is evolving rather than simply preserving legacy SharePoint functionality.

Should You Move to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition?

For organizations running SharePoint Server 2016 or 2019, moving to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition can provide a more sustainable and modern platform. However, the transition should be carefully planned to protect SharePoint sites, documents, permissions, metadata, and other business-critical content.

When the migration involves multiple sites, large data volumes, complex permissions, or limited administrative resources, using a dedicated migration solution can simplify the process. Shoviv SharePoint Migrator is a suitable option for organizations planning SharePoint migrations because it supports batch migration, preservation of folder structures and metadata, and efficient transfer of SharePoint data.

Shoviv can help organizations move their SharePoint content while reducing the manual effort involved in traditional migration approaches. Its migration capabilities can be useful when preparing an existing SharePoint environment for Subscription Edition, particularly where large numbers of sites or substantial amounts of content need to be transferred.

Before migration, we recommend assessing the existing SharePoint farm, identifying customizations and dependencies, preparing the target environment, and validating migrated content. A structured migration approach helps reduce disruption and ensures that the move to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition is controlled and reliable.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft launched SharePoint Server Subscription Edition to modernize the SharePoint Server lifecycle.

The fundamental idea is simple: instead of waiting several years for another major SharePoint Server release, organizations can remain on a continuously serviced platform that receives monthly security and quality updates and regular Feature Updates.

The model provides several important advantages:

  • Continuous innovation

  • Regular security improvements

  • Reduced dependence on major-version upgrades

  • Predictable Feature Updates

  • Modern lifecycle management

  • Better alignment with Microsoft's cloud development model

  • Continued support for organizations requiring on-premises SharePoint

For organizations that need SharePoint Server today, Subscription Edition represents Microsoft's long-term direction for the platform. It combines the control of an on-premises deployment with a servicing model designed to keep the environment current.

The most important change is therefore not simply the name Subscription Edition. It is the shift from a version-based SharePoint strategy to a continuously serviced SharePoint platform—one where organizations maintain a current environment instead of repeatedly replacing an aging SharePoint version.
