With Season 15 expected around September 15, 2026, the end of the current season is a good time to take a serious look at your stash. Many players naturally start collecting D4 items and materials because they assume anything useful now will become valuable once the next season begins. Runes often end up at the center of this habit, but seasonal progression does not work that way.

For anyone collecting D4 items while preparing for a fresh seasonal character, the most important point is that seasonal resources do not provide a starting bank for Season 15. Your existing seasonal inventory, gold, materials, and runes remain with the character as it moves to the Eternal Realm. A new seasonal character begins its own progression instead.

A Fresh Season Means a Fresh Start

It can be tempting to spend the final weeks of a season farming as many runes as possible. If the goal is to hand those resources to a new Season 15 character, however, the plan does not work.

Seasonal characters and Eternal characters follow separate progression structures. When the current season ends, your character and its belongings transfer to Eternal rather than becoming a shared resource pool for the next seasonal character.

That makes pre-farming runes an inefficient strategy for players who only care about Season 15.

Instead, use your current stock when it can make your existing character stronger. A useful rune that improves your build today has a clear benefit. A rune sitting in storage solely because you hope it will somehow help your next seasonal character does not.

Permanent Progress Is More Useful

There are still meaningful ways to prepare for the new season.

Account-wide progress such as Altars of Lilith, map exploration, and applicable Renown rewards can continue to provide benefits when you create a new character. If any of these areas remain unfinished, they can be a better investment of your time than repeatedly farming seasonal materials.

This distinction is easy to overlook. A seasonal resource may disappear from your immediate reach when you start again, while permanent account progress can continue to support future characters.

For players with limited time before the rollover, prioritizing permanent progression can therefore be a much more efficient preparation strategy.

Eternal Players Should Keep Strong Runes

The calculation changes if your Eternal Realm characters are important to you.

Season 15 is bringing substantial changes to Mythic crafting, and the Jeweler will require three Resplendent Sparks and three Runes to craft a Mythic item. Because of that, high-quality legendary runes can have a useful role after your seasonal character reaches Eternal.

This does not mean your entire rune stash deserves protection.

A better approach is to sort your collection. Keep the runes that have meaningful crafting potential and look for ways to reduce the number of low-value duplicates. If you have a huge quantity of unwanted options, there is little reason to let them consume valuable storage space.

Use the Trade-In System Wisely

The Jeweler provides a way to reroll sets of three unwanted runes into random new ones. The Horadric Cube can also help upgrade lower-tier runes.

For a player sitting on a large amount of excess material, this can be a useful cleanup method before the rollover.

It is still important to keep expectations realistic. Rerolling does not guarantee a rare or desirable result. The value comes from turning resources you already consider expendable into another opportunity.

If you have several stacks of runes that have been sitting untouched for weeks, this is a much more logical use for them than simply continuing to collect even more.

Other Resources Deserve Attention

Rune preparation should also be balanced against other Season 15 changes.

Glints of Hope Bags are worth holding because their future rewards can include Superior Lair Keys. Opening them immediately may not be the best choice if you are interested in taking advantage of the updated system.

Resplendent Sparks deserve protection as well. With Pandemonium Fragments being removed, Sparks become particularly important for Mythic-related crafting.

You should also inspect your Unique collection before salvaging anything unusual. A Unique with excellent Greater Affixes could become a strong candidate for the new Horadric Cube upgrade path, which can turn a regular Unique into a Mythic version while preserving its stats.

Avoid the Everything-Is-Valuable Trap

One of the easiest mistakes to make before a seasonal reset is assuming that every item should be saved.

That approach usually creates a crowded stash without creating a stronger character.

Instead, give every resource a purpose. If something can improve your current build, consider using it. If it has clear value for your Eternal characters, keep it. If it has no obvious purpose and is easy to replace, there is little reason to protect it indefinitely.

This also makes it easier to identify the genuinely valuable resources when Season 15 arrives. A clean stash is much easier to manage than several tabs filled with materials you forgot you had.

Preparing for the Rollover

Players who enjoy both seasonal and Eternal content can take a balanced approach. Spend useful resources on the current character, retain the strongest runes for Eternal crafting, and convert unwanted lower-tier materials when appropriate. At the same time, finish permanent account-wide progress that can help your next seasonal character.

For players who decide that acquiring specific upgrades is more efficient than waiting for random drops, it may also make sense to buy diablo 4 runes when the right resource is difficult to obtain through normal play.

Season 15 preparation is ultimately about making decisions rather than simply accumulating more items. Know where your resources will end up, keep the ones with a clear purpose, and avoid mistaking seasonal hoarding for genuine preparation.
